a man apart
There are still people who are being authentic, no matter that the radios, T.V’s, newspapers and magazines are telling us different! I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the website of The Take Away Shows.
Bon Iver is unelievably awesome and this video captures so well his authenticity and passion.
Grizzly Bear
There are times when I stop…listen…look around to see if anyone else is near enough to have noticed what I just have and then press rewind and start again.
When I began listening to Grizzly Bear’s album 0f 2006 titled Yellow House I had that sensation from start to finish…that was earlier today and I’m now listening to it for a third time.
The words ‘I know I know’ start off this album with beautiful interweaving melodies and gentle rhythms drifting in and out of dreams and realities. All I can say is ‘I Know’ I totally love this album and I wish this band only the BEST!

The Have-Nots Have Had Enough
If you recognise the words in this heading then you already know who I am about to introduce…
yes, it is the inimitably torn musical pain of Rocky Votolato’s album Suicide Medicine.
Listen to this and you know for sure that this guy has felt life at it’s most challenging and he puts it all into his voice and his guitar. “you know this world is eating him alive, but you just can’t find the metaphor to describe, bottle of pills and the emptiness in this soft light”. I mean, COME ON, the guy’s amazing!
Another thing which really attracts me to this album is the bare-bones feel of it. There are few instruments used, and only where they work to lift and move the song forwards. Subtle uses of drums and haunting harmonica have never failed to move and electrify me. I hope it does the same for you.
Extinct birds sing again!

The Dodos
have been a breath of fresh air to my ears these last few weeks!
The only album of theirs I’ve heard is called Visiter and in my opinion it stands out from a lot of music because it’s got more to offer than one or two songs of high quality. Basically, the entire album rocks…HARD!
I’ve just read it was voted 3rd best album of 2008 by Under The Radar Magazine, which I feel confirms that I know what I’m talking about;)
There is a great balance of intensity and calm on this album, with skill flowing through all! They’re using rhythms I’ve never heard before, giving a rolling movement to the songs, many of which flow from one right into the next, something I really enjoy.
If Indy-pop bands had balls, they’d sound like The Dodos.
I’m super excited to hear what comes next and I’m super excited to see what you think of these guys.
As always… enJOY!
